What was your first experience with social media?
Oh gosh, it seems so long ago, but I think it was only five years ago. I remember enlisting my assistant to set up MySpace and Facebook pages for the museum. Then came the question, so now that we are on social media what do we do with it? When we figured out how to post pictures and write pithy posts, we thought we were in the big leagues! When we posted a yarn bombing of one of our trees in the museum garden, we got the most likes of any other post in 6 months, and it was then that we realized how much fun we could have with social media. I actually didn set up my own Facebook account until a few months later and all of these random people from high school came out of the woodwork and wanted to befriend me. I remember these discussions with my friends about whether or not to let someone be your friend on Facebook if they were only an acquaintance and not a close friend. It funny to think that we thought it was such a big deal like the process of joining a sorority! In 2012, the PMA had a photography exhibition called Tanja Alexia Hollander: Are You Really My Friend?, that actually dealt with this same issue of what it really means to Deca Durabolin 250mg 10ml be a in the age of social media.
What do you like about social media?
I like the ability to 4-chlorodehydromethyltestosteron be connected with many of my friends and family Equipoise Bloat around the "Buy Cheap Jintropin Online" country and to see photos of their kids. I addicted to Pinterest love love love Pinterest the photos of craft projects, interior design, recipes, etc. It all so inspiring and a total time sucker! A positive outcome of social media is that it has energized social change throughout the world. There a reason why China has banned social media. I watched a documentary about the Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei called Sorry. Weiwei has done an amazing job of encouraging social change through art and social media. Last year, the editors of ArtReview magazine named Weiwei the most powerful artist in the world.
What I don like about social media?
I a very private person, so I sort of have a love/hate relationship with social media. I don always want people to know what I doing! What totally embarrassing is that my mom, Jane (age 73) is more active than me on Facebook. She will call me and say, you know that so and so is engaged? Me, mom, I didn it on Facebook! she says. Like the Catholic guilt isn enough that I have to deal with the Facebook guilt from my mom too! It scares me that there is so much bullying and hate on social media; it so cowardly. Social media has changed the whole dynamic of how kids interact with each other and it concerns me for my nieces and nephews who are now tweens. I also think it really creepy that ads pop up on Facebook after you have gone to a retail website. It so Big Brother! What I really want to know is who can keep up with all of these social media platforms? Who has the time?
What would it be like for you to disconnect from social media for six months?
I would be completely fine as long as I could continue to be connected to the news. I a news junky. During the Boston Marathon bombings, I was getting CNN alerts on my phone every hour and I couldn stop following the action. I would probably have a lot more time on my hands without social media. I might actually get to clean out my basement.
Of course, I have to say that the PMA, and our very own Graeme Kennedy, does a fabulous job with social media. Rob, I have you to thank you for helping me navigate the social media landscape in the early days!
I want to thank Kristen for taking the time to talk with me about her opinions on, and experience with, social media.
